Promoting education reform to address the inequity in schools that disproportionally affects low-income students.
WHAT WE STAND FOR.
WHO WE ARE.
We are a group of student
activists who believe that education reform needs to be at the forefront of the national conversation on racial injustice.
WHAT WE HOPE TO BRING AWARENESS TO.
Inequity in Public School Funding
On average, poor, majority-nonwhite school districts receive 19 percent, or about $2,600, less per student than affluent majority-white school districts.
Anti-bias and anti-racist programs for all faculty
A 2007 study by the American Sociological Association found that mentor programs, diversity task-forces, and diversity managers were overwhelming successes in organizations.
Accessibility to mental health resources
Black emerging adults (ages 18-25) experience higher rates of mental health problems and lower rates of mental health service utilization compared to white emerging adults, and older Black adults. Changing Black perceptions towards and access to mental health resources needs to start in schools.
Unfair disciplinary action between students from different backgrounds
Black students in the United States are subject to disciplinary action at rates much higher than their counterparts. These disciplinary actions put students at higher risk for negative life outcomes, including involvement in the criminal justice system.
Incorporation of Culturally Responsive Teaching and representation in faculty
Research illustrates that instructional materials, assignments, and texts that reflect students’ backgrounds and experiences are critical to engagement and deep, meaningful learning.
Other studies have found that a strong racial-ethnic identity is linked to higher self-esteem, academic attitudes, well-being, and the ability to navigate discrimination.
